I have a memory of sitting on the floor with my oldest son when he was a toddler and I was chewing gum and blowing bubbles and he was so fascinated with the bubbles. He was staring at my mouth so intently, sticking his little tongue out between his lips trying to copy the process, except that he wasn’t chewing any gum.
Since today is National Bubble Gum Day, Feb. 2, I decided today would be a good day to teach them to blow bubbles.
I bought a few packs of bubble gum – I had planned Hubba Bubba because of the commercials from when I was a kid (“Hubba Bubba Bubble Gum!’) but found sugar-free Extra bubble-gum flavor instead. Instead of the one piece they’re usually allowed to have when they chew gum, I gave them each their own five-stick pack and allowed them to chew it all so they could blow a bubble.
Today was also Groundhog Day. Apparently Punxsutawney Phil predicted six more weeks of winter, which is a good thing for Phoenix residents, since temperatures have already reached 80 degrees here and it’s only Feb. 2. Unfortunately, eight other groundhogs didn’t agree and said spring is coming sooner, according to on article on time.com.
